Is it possible for us to not sin at all? With God all things are possible. If it were not possible to stop sinning, why would Jesus tell people to "go and sin no more?" God is not going to tell us to do something if we did not have the ability to do it.
Joh 5:14
Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing befall thee.Joh 8:11 And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, Neither do I condemn thee: go thy way; from henceforth sin no more.
1Co 15:34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame
If we continue to sin, it's our choice, but it's not because it's impossible to stop. Another argument is that we can never be rid of our pride. If a person has problems with pride, it's because he chooses to have it. Those who are of Christ have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts (Gal. 5:24). One is either serving sin or he is not. "Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin" (Rom. 6:6).
We will never lose our ability to sin. Why? Because we'll always be tempted, but God will always provide a way of escape (1 Cor. 10:13). People often say that having bad thoughts are sin. That's what the enemy would like for you and I to believe. He plants seeds of bad thoughts. You may be tempted to steal, to lie, or cheat your neighbor, etc.. No matter how many bad thoughts you may have, it is NOT sin. What is sin is what you do with those thoughts. Satan tempted Jesus in the desert when Jesus was at His weakest state. Satan tempted Jesus but He dealt with those thoughts, not letting them take root. If temptation were sin, Jesus would not be sinless. When bad thoughts come into our head, it's temptation, but again, temptation is not sin. Resist those thoughts. In other words, don't dwell on it. Come back with Scripture - pray. Follow Jesus' example.
The thing about sin is that it is fun: Well, only for a while. Sin has consequences in this life as well as in eternity. Turning from sin is not for God's benefit, but for ours. Life is more peaceful and more abundant when we are not serving sin (Rom. 6:16).
Someone sarcastically asked me one time, "What is the secret to stopping sin?" The answer is LOVE. How much do we love Christ? Do we love Him enough to obey Him? Jesus let it be known, "Go and sin no more..." And Paul says, "Awake to righteousness and sin not..."
I ofen hear, "If people can stop sinning, Jesus died for nothing." No. Jesus died for sinners. We need the atoning work of Jesus Christ because we haven't obeyed God. In fact, it is because we have the ability to obey God that we are liable to punishment for our disobedience. And it is because we deserve punishment that we need His atonement. But if we couldn't obey, we couldn't be punished, and therefore wouldn't need Jesus. While we are capable of obedience, our obedience is not capable of atoning for our sins. Therefore, our ability to obey the Gospel does not nullify the necessity for the atonement of Christ.
The real question is not whether a person can stop sinning. Someone who truly loves God will not want to sin because they know that sin displeases God and results in destruction to self and others.
The real question is, "Do you believe God or man?" and "Do you love God?" The carnal man says, "I can't stop sinning". But God says, "stop sinning or something worse will happen to you than physical illness or pain". Jesus said, "do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." --Matt 10:28
