I often hear people tell me,
“This is what the Holy Spirit showed me and confirmed to me about
the trinity while studying the scriptures.” I do not apologize for
saying that it is simply not true. If one were to be brutally
honest, they would
admit that they have been taught
this doctrine.
The
average person who is just a pew sitter will let teachings like this
fly over their head. For instance, I had a conversation with my
Italian friend who is Catholic about what the Catholic Church teaches
concerning the trinity. I first started by asking her, “Do you
believe Jesus is the Son of God?” She said, “Yes.” I then asked
her, “Do you believe Jesus is God?” She said, “Of course not.”
“Why?” I asked. She said, “Because he is the Son of God.” She
did not believe what I was telling her about what the Catholic Church
teaches. I said to her, “Is not the traditional hymn “Holy Holy,
Holy” not familiar to you?” (Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early
in the morning our song shall rise to thee; holy, holy, holy!
merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity!)
There
could be many reading this who have no idea this is what their church
teaches. However, there are those who claim to dedicate themselves to
study of the scriptures that have fallen into deception by certain
teachings approved by their church with their brand of theology. I
liken it to Jehovah’s Witnesses who say they study the scriptures
but really study from Watchtower material. Likewise, people in
mainstream Christianity do not go back and check the bible for
themselves to see if what they are learning is true or not. They just
accept what they are taught as fact, and grow deeper into deception,
not realizing how steeped they are growing intellectually and
emotionally to that doctrine. When it gets to this point, it is very
hard to pull them out of deception. Of course, they do not question
what they are taught because they assume, as I did, they are being
taught the truths of the bible.
Unless
one is an actual truth seeker, when approached by someone who offers
an opposite view that can be proven to be more in line with
scripture, he will consider what is presented rather than cling to
what is claimed as orthodoxy or accepted belief.
I
have now learned to pay attention to the “caution signs” that
flash through my mind when I read or hear how one must use
extra-biblical terminology to explain a doctrine that forms
contradictions in scripture and intellect. There may be times when
extra-biblical terminology or other reading material may be useful,
but if it is conflicting with scriptures and in logic, I am compelled
to dismiss it.
In
this book, I hope I have established enough verses to at least get
your mind geared away from the mindset of the trinity thinking and
the Oneness view as well. I hope it gives you the incentive to study
further other verses that are applied to this doctrine. At the end of
this book, I will suggest some reading material for you.
As
you have learned and hoped you have understood, is that the trinity
teaching does not hold a candle to biblical truth. There are many
passages in scripture that prove Jesus is not God.39
The concept of the trinity teaching is called a mystery,
which is
incomprehensible,
and must be accepted by
faith! Actually, it is
a mass of confusion that needs
philosophy and analogies to
explain what is incomprehensible! Why try to explain something
we cannot comprehend? The trinity teaching defies the power of reason
that God gave us. I believe it was Galileo who said:
I do not feel obliged to believe
that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and
intellect has intended us to forgo their use.
